Hi-Lites Stands with Rappler in Defending Press Freedom

Today, three days after commemorating our country’s independence from oppression, we are again in a dangerous predicament, but this time, instead of foreigners imposing their will upon us, we have our very own leaders causing our oppression.

Rappler CEO and Executive Director Maria Ressa and former Rappler research-writer Reynaldo Santos, Jr. were convicted of cyber-libel (https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1291681/rappler-ceo-maria-ressa-writer-guilty-of-cyberlibel).

If these established journalists can be convicted for speaking the truth, what more for ordinary citizens who demand accountability and transparency from the government? Publications like ours are in danger of being silenced. Everyone is in danger of being silenced. The blatant attack on fierce, fearless, and truthful journalism through this conviction sends a very clear message to the entire country: dissent towards the government is not welcome.

“I appeal to you, the journalists in the room, the Filipinos who are listening, to protect your rights, we’re meant to be a cautionary tale, we are meant to make you afraid. I appeal again, don’t be afraid.”

Now is the time to overcome our fears and to be courageous.

Hi-Lites stands with Maria Ressa, Rey Santos, Jr, and Rappler in holding the line for press freedom.
