PinaSulong Committee launches contests for 36th People Power Anniversary

By Isabella Magno and Julia Mangmang

With the purpose of promoting engaged citizenship and to commemorate the 36th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, the “Pinas, Sulong!” (PinaSulong) Committee of the Ateneo de Manila Senior High School organized digital poster making and essay writing competitions, with the theme “Tuloy ang Laban.”

According to Social Sciences Department Head Mr. Franz Santos, they wanted to involve the ASHS community in keeping the spirit of People Power alive, adding that they wanted to see how students remember EDSA, and how they evaluate its legacy given the current situation of the country

When asked about the essence of the writing and art-making in contributing to the political climate, Santos said, “We saw [art and literature] in history when Filipino artists used their skills … to protest against the status quo, from the time of Rizal, until now, even with the use of creative memes. These mediums provide individuals with an outlet for their sentiments, generate awareness of social issues, and help connect people.”

Mr. Santos ended by emphasizing that the People Power Revolution epitomizes who Filipinos are, and that it is their responsibility to continuously assert their identities and values.

Digital posters must be submitted in png, jpeg, or pdf form to Mr. Mark Santos (msantos@ateneo.edu), while original essays following the 700 to 1000-word limit are to be submitted to Mr. Jemo Ramos (jmramos@ateneo.edu) on or before February 22, 2022. The file should follow the naming format: Section_Class Number_SURNAME.

The criteria for digital poster submissions are as follows: Visual Impact (45 points), Interpretation of the theme (35 pints), Uniqueness (20 points).

The criteria for essay submissions are as follows: Content and relevance to the theme (50 points), Organization of thoughts (40 points), Grammar and structure (10 points).

These outputs should be coursed thru email with the subject “DIGITAL POSTER” or “ESSAY CONTEST” for the poster outputs and essay outputs, respectively.

Winners will receive prizes, while their pieces will be published in Hi-Lites.
