On Tuesday, July 25, 2023, Sarina Bolden scored the Philippines’ first-ever goal in the FIFA Women’s World Cup at the Wellington Regional Stadium, upsetting host New Zealand with a 1-0 victory.

The historical moment occurred after Sara Eggesvik delivered a fine cross in the matchup’s 24th minute, leading to Bolden’s header that brought home the bacon.

Goalkeeper Victoria Esson initially deflected Bolden’s move; however, the ball hit the net, which eventually led to the Philippines’ point.

“I can’t believe what we have achieved,” said Sara Eggesvik. “It shows that it’s possible to do something big,” she added.

Despite New Zealand dominating possession in the first half, the Filipinas held them off with a tight defense and continued to fail passing its resolve as time ran out.

“I’ve got everyone else’s tears all over my eyes, it’s so emotional. You saw how long New Zealand had to wait for its first win — six World Cups — and (for Philippines) to get it today was incredible,” Football Coach Alen Stajcic expressed over the emotional triumph.

“We made our own luck but we also had a lot of luck. New Zealand was on the front foot the whole game and deserved something. But football is cruel sometimes,” Stajcic remarked.

Both teams exchanged a series of strikes and turnovers, spicing up the game until it approached its end, with the Philippines prevailing.

Last September, Bolden also earned a goal during the Philippines’ friendly competition against the same team in Fullerton, California.
