Two teams composed of students from Ateneo Senior High School (ASHS) and Ateneo Junior High School (AJHS) bagged awards in the 11th National Geology Congress (NGC), held at the University of the Philippines Diliman from April 5 to 6.
With their head trainer, Mr. Mardocheo Yao Crispino, and coach, Ms. Jeng Uy, Team A, comprised of Jann Laurice Bay (11-Wright), Cherlyn Bacara (11-Nakaura), and Miguel Oliva (10-Rodrigues), as well as Team B, made up of Charlize Jade Janda (11-Realino), Angela Santelices (11-San Vitores), and Jose Miguel Ignacio (10-Regis), represented the school in the congress.
During the first day, the delegates, along with students from other schools in the country, had a workshop that mainly focused on the geological sciences, which helped them discover various career opportunities in the said field.

GeoQuiz: An Earth Science Competition was then conducted on the second day, where the two teams were included in the top 10 and advanced to the final round. Team B finished in second place, winning a trophy, silver medals, and certificates.
“Both rounds were challenging for us; thus, we didn’t really expect a podium finish,” Charlize Jade Janda from Team B expressed.
“Overall, beyond this accomplishment, I would say that participating in the NGC was such a fulfilling and fun-filled experience for each of us,” she added.
Both teams were trained weekly through online and onsite review sessions by their coaches to prepare for the contest.
“During these meetings, we tackled important topics and points of interest that we could further research on our own time,” Cherlyn Bacara from Team A shared.
“In addition, we also made use of various materials from our trainer and group mates,” she concluded.
